Strategic goal: to ensure full respect of women’s right to freely choose termination of pregnancy, as well as access to services for safe and legal abortion and increased rate of contraception use
Current activities:
- Advocacy and capacity building of health institutions and organisations to introduce medical abortion in gynaecological and obstetrical hospitals as an alternative to surgical interventions, which should improve both the quality and the choice of services for safe abortion
- Piloting the medical abortion as a service in cooperation with the University Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics and the professional association of gynaecology and obstetrics
- Proactive advocacy for respect of women’s right to make free decisions on family planning, including choice to terminate pregnancy, as a reply to the anti-abortion activities to deny the right of choice
Results:
- The first completed research into the level of knowledge, positions and practice of gynaecologists with regards to medical abortion, has demonstrated improved description of the situation, the opportunities and the challenges on its introduction into the medical practice.
- 12 gynaecologists specialists from 4 hospitals throughout Macedonia completed a training on medical aspects of medical abortion, facilitated by a trainer from the Karolinska University from Sweden
- In February 2009, 41 civil associations unified into a platform to advocate for the right of abortion as a choice, and signed the Declaration Abortion is a right to choose and a reproductive right of every woman, where they demand ensuring the right to sexual and reproductive choice, improving the access to save abortion services, protection of the dignity of women from public violence, improved contraception and improved access to information and services for the young in the field of sexual and reproductive health.
