Before you is HERA’s 2023 Enlargement Review, with a focus on Roma reproductive and social well-being in our country.
Exclusion, discrimination, social stereotypes and stigma are main socio-cultural factors that prevent the marginalised groups, especially Roma women, from exercising their human rights. In order for them to be integrated in the Macedonian society, they must have access to appropriate employment opportunities and quality services that are non-judgmental and non-discriminatory.
Despite our declarative efforts to join the EU, our state reduces the funds for preventive health care for socially excluded groups of citizens, does not provide comprehensive and sufficient support for victims of domestic violence, nor does it work to reduce the high unemployment rate and eliminate the systemic discrimination that Roma people face on a daily basis.
Following the 2022 Report, this one, too, highlights the gaps in legislation and policy implementation and provides recommendations so that Roma women could enjoy their social status as any other citizen in the country.
