The tourist guide “Uncovering HERstory” opens new perspectives for understanding cultural heritage through the stories, contributions, and creative work connected to women who have left a significant impact on society. Throughout history, many of these stories have remained at the margins of official narratives, even though their importance is essential to social, cultural, and political processes themselves. This guide aims to make these individuals, places, and events visible, recognizing them as an integral part of the shared cultural heritage of these regions.
Through a process of research, learning, and collaboration, young people, under the mentorship of experts from North Macedonia, Serbia, and Albania, worked on mapping and documenting locations connected to women’s movements, cultural production, and social change. These locations are part of the past, yet we see them as living spaces of memory that enable a deeper understanding of the role and significance of women in shaping communities and society itself. In this way, through a youth-led process, young people explored their own history and critically engaged with dominant historical narratives. For this reason, this guide represents a tourist resource and at the same time, an educational tool, for preserving and promoting feminist cultural heritage, and for fostering a more inclusive and gender-sensitive understanding of history.
The guide was developed within the framework of the project “Uncovering HERstory: Empowering Youth and Preserving Feminist Heritage,” implemented by HERA – Health Education and Research Association, the Center for Population Policies and Sustainable Development – IPPF Serbia, and ACPD Albania, with the support of ALDA – European Association for Local Democracy, under the BOOST programme. The project aims to empower young people as active researchers and promoters of cultural heritage, contributing to greater visibility of women’s stories and their place in public and cultural spaces.
