The Recommendations for Encouraging the Provision of SRH Services by Family Doctors by Improving the Payment System resulted from the findings of the Mapping of Family Doctors from Primary Healthcare in Macedonia that we conducted in 2021.
The mapping, among other things, confirmed the previous knowledge about the obstacles in providing full access to such health services: limited human resources (insufficient number of specialists in family medicine and their unequal territorial distribution); administrative burden emphasised by deficiencies in health service record systems; lack of protocols for early detection, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases adapted to the primary level of care; shortcomings in the method of payment of primary healthcare; legal restrictions; insufficient awareness of the population, etc.
Considering that sexual and reproductive rights are part of basic human rights, and the right to health is key to the wellbeing of all citizens, these recommendations provide guidance on how payment methods can be improved to encourage family doctors to provide sexual and reproductive services.
This is particularly important considering that currently, family doctors represent 21% of the total number of registered (selected) GPs, but also that in the last 3-4 years there is a decreasing trend of doctors who acquire this title.
