The state has accepted the recommendations for ensuring the availability of medical abortion and modern contraception
On July 4, 2019, at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, a plenary session of the Human Rights Council was held, where a decision on the outcome of the third universal periodic review of human rights in the Republic of North Macedonia was adopted.
Our country has accepted the recommendations given in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights, from which we would highlight those related to the availability and accessibility of the medical abortion in the country in accordance with the WHO guidelines on safe abortion, and to ensure universal coverage of all costs related to SRH and modern contraception.
Our representative Dragana Karovska Čemerska welcomed the acceptance of the recommendations and in her statement she stressed how necessary it is that the country provides registration, purchase and distribution of medical abortion pills as soon as possible. She also pointed out that free contraception targeting vulnerable groups is not provided because of the obstacles (or lack of mechanism) for its procurement and distribution. Finally, she urged the Government, in line with the Government’s Health Program in 2020, to ensure the inclusion of modern contraception into the list of drugs covered by the National Health Insurance Fund.
